Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes – The role of private investigators in Divorce settlements.

Divorce lawyers for both Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise today confirmed they had reached a “speedy” resolution and have now settled their divorce.  A joint statement was released confirming they were committed to do the best thing for their six-year-old daughter, Suri.  It is clear this is the best possible outcome for what could have turned into a nasty public dispute and would of potentially harmed not only Cruise’s image but also shined a spotlight on the Scientology religion.

Perhaps this time Cruise has taken valuable lessons learnt from his previous Divorce with Nicole Kidman in 2001.  Recent Court documents filed by a tabloid magazine editor suggest at the time of his Divorce with Kidman he had conspired with former Private Investigator Anthony Pellicano to spy on her and had secretly wiretapped her conversations.  The disgraced Investigator is now serving 15 years in prison for tapping the phones of some of Hollywood’s most rich and famous.

It has also been reported that three days prior to Holmes filing for divorce, Police were called to her home after a black Mercedes SUV with male occupants were seen acting suspiciously outside her property.  They allegedly continued to follow her and even showed up the following day in a different car.  Were these men Private Investigators hired by Cruises’ camp?  Surely if they were, their cover had clearly been blown if an online celebrity magazine appropriately titled “Starfeine” had reported on them.

Surprisingly, while surveillance will always be high on the list for Private Investigators undertaking Family Law matters, the main reason why people would hire a detective in this instance is typically to uncover hidden assets.  As private investigators we have access to various subscription databases and records which can identify potential unknown assets and companies which you may be unaware your spouse may have had.   Other reasons why an individual would engage a private investigator during Divorce proceedings would be in instances of child custody to determine whether their spouse was abusing or neglecting your children, or alternatively was participating in immoral or illegal activity.  Supporting evidence will always help your claims if you are fighting for sole custody of your children.

There are certainly lessons to be learnt from the Divorce between Holmes and Cruise.  Whilst a fast resolution is always preferred, there will always be a place for Private Investigators when it comes to Divorce.  It’s a matter of how you use them and ensuring these are for the right reasons.
