Online Investigations is warning Australians about a scam email purporting to be from Origin Energy.
The email has been sent from the address firstname.lastname@example.org with the Subject heading “Your Origin Electricity Bill.
The email then goes on to state:
Here’s your latest bill from Origin showing what you’ve used and how much to pay.
If anything’s unclear, jump online to originenergy.com.au or give us a call on 1300 661 658 – we’ll be happy to help.

PS Don’t forget to pay by the due date, or you may have to pay a $12.00 late payment fee.
There are various stated outstanding amounts depending on the email received (for example $323.23 and $654.01) but all claim to due by the 13 June 2017.
The email contains a “view bill” button which leads to a compromised link not affiliated with Origin Electricity. The link leads to an automatic download of a zip file containing the JS.downloader malicious software. This type of malware can steal hard disk space and memory that slows down or completely halts your PC. It is typically spread by cybercriminals for the purposes of obtaining personal information, hijacking your computer and further spreading the virus.
On Monday in response to the scam, Origin Energy released the following warning to their customers on their official Facebook account:
Scam Alert: Please be aware that we’ve had reports of customers and non-customers receiving fake Origin bills via email….
