Up to 6000 Australians may have their Internet disrupted at 2pm today after the FBI plans to switch off a temporary solution to a computer malware named “DNSchanger”.
Estonian hackers created this malicious software in an attempt to control victims’ DNS – which is the system allowing users to access the internet and send email. The malicious DNS servers would give fake, malicious answers, altering user searches, and promoting fake and dangerous products. Because every web search starts with DNS, the malware showed users an altered version of the Internet.
The FBI and Estonian authorities have been working on the problem since last November, with a temporary server created to allow infected users to keep accessing the web. This is due to be turned off at 2:00pm today which will effectively stop infected users from accessing the Internet.
Australians can easily check whether they have been effected by following this link – http://www.dns-ok.gov.au.
