Online Investigations would like to extend their congratulations to two Melbourne DIY Detectives after noticing elderly customer Iris Thomson (87) had not shown up for her regular appointments that Friday.
Mark Montagnani, owner of Sweet Lovers Cafe and beautician Laura Acciarito became concerned after Thomson did not show for lunch, something she had been doing for the past nine years. After ringing around and confirming no-one had seen her, the pair went to her house to make further inquiries. Finding her spare key, they eventually found Thomson lying on the floor inside – a result of tripping over her electric blanket cord and breaking both hips.
Three weeks of rehabilitation later, Thomson is now home and back at Sweet Lovers Cafe for lunch every Friday.
Aside from trusting in your gut instinct, there are some more important lessons which can be learnt from this. If you are aware of elderly friends and family living alone, take the time to call on them regularly. Some older people don’t want to be a bother and wish to remain independent without being a burden, however there are a number of ways to check on them without being so obvious such as ringing them, organising regular day trips and offering to do some of the household chores.
